Futon cover in tsutsugakizome with sho-chiku-bai design
This futon cover is executed in tones of blue and white with free sinuous curving lines, with lively bursts of white representing pine needle clusters.  The Three Friends, pine, bamboo, and plum are represented; please see our Japanese Design Motifs for the meaning of this popular design.  The detail below shows the fineness of execution, with color variations caused by lighting in photograph.
Dimensions about 50" x 57" on three panels of the traditional Japanese loom width.  On sturdy cloth in deep colors and near-perfect condition; probably from the first or second quarter of the 20th century.
