Futon cover with phoenix sitting on paulownia tree
An unusual phoenix, plump, round and quizzical, sits on the branch of a paulownia tree in bloom.  Please see the Japanese Design Motifs section for information about the significance of the phoenix and paulownia.
Dimensions about 50" x 57" on four panels of standard Japanese loom width.  The cloth is thick and sturdy with little if any signs of wear, though the colored parts are probably faded to their soft tans, greys, light reds, and lighter shade of indigo blue.  The ground is an even dark indigo blue.  A dark stain is on the right wing of the phoenix at the bottom of the blue section, visible at left and in detail below.
