Futon cover in brown with geometric family crest, mon, and scrolling vine border

Made of two large panels, twice the width of the traditional Japanese loom, this unusual futon cover shows the influence of western weaving and colors.  In the center, a family crest combining the hexagonal shape representing tortoise-shells with three horizontal bars, the character for the number three.  Around the border, a stylized form of karakusa, "Chinese grass" or scrolling vine, in two shades of blue with white.  The blues fade into each other with a beautiful effect, as is seen in the detail at lower left.

Dimensions about 50" x 82," consisting of two 25" panels.  The fabric is heavy with little or no wear but there is some deterioration in places, and some light-colored stains, perhaps from old mold, and a few rust-like spots on the white part.  It is suitable for decorative purposes only unless it is attached to a backing material.  A small emroidered name in red thread on one edge appears in part to be the katakana letters for "Miyako."
