Katazome panels are usually from futon, or quilt, covers. The covers are made from panels the width of the traditional Japanese loom, about 12", sewn together with, in most cases, a solid indigo back, and quilted through the cotton stuffing. When they became soiled, they were removed and sometimes the individual panels taken apart and reassembled to distribute wear evenly.

The panels offered here are graded with two numbers which represent the quality of the design and the condition of the particular piece. Both are on a scale of one to five, running from common designs or poor condition to rare designs or excellent condition. Condition ratings of three or less probably means the piece requires backing with a lining material that can be ironed on if the cloth is to be used for pillows or in other ways that will put stress on it. Dimensions are approximate, because Japanese looms vary in width, and because when the futon is taken apart for laundering, the panels are sometimes trimmed, or otherwise altered in the process.
